Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) Program
For 19 years, Colibri Boutique Hotels has been at the forefront of environmental, social and governance responsibility. Our philosophy stems from gratitude and giving back to the planet, to people, to the environment, and to the Tulum we inhabit.
To help us incorporate this in our daily practices, we are delighted to have Alejandra Cornejo as our full time Social Responsibility Manager. Alejandra is a Biologist (UAM) with multidisciplinary training; in arts and sociology (UNAM). She specialized in Environmental Education and Education for Sustainability and has more than 15 years of experience in this field.
We have two major programs that we run, We Care, which focuses on our holistic commitment towards ethical excellence in all matters of the environment, our team members and their families. And the Giving Back program which focuses on how we can give back to the wider community with educational programs, donations and special events.
BADGES
ENVIRONMENT
BEACH, STREET, AND PROTECTED NATURAL AREA CLEANUPS
Every year, we participate in and organize at least five cleanups of public beaches, protected natural areas, and streets in Tulum with the support of our great Colibrí team and their families. Many of our cleanups are carried out in collaboration with the Municipality, Public Schools, local Civil Society Organizations, and other companies.
TURTLES
Colibri Boutique Hotels supports the Municipal Program “Kanan Aak” for the Protection and Conservation of Sea Turtles in Tulum. This program patrols the beaches, marks and counts the nests, protects the eggs, and helps the hatchlings reach the sea. Colibri Boutique Hotels supports this effort by funding the salary of a turtle technician and providing an ATV during the season.
RECYCLING
We manage the waste of each of the hotels and have installed sorting containers with detailed information for our guests. By collecting and delivering packaging, bottles, and containers to recycling companies, the COLIBRI FAMILY contributes to significant environmental benefits.
CIRCULAR ECONOMY INITIATIVES
At each of our hotels, we strive to include initiatives that reinforce the circular economy. One of our best examples is the compost we generate from the bio-waste produced at La Zebra. This compost is used in a garden of local aromatic herbs, which are then used in the kitchen area.
WATER MANAGEMENT
Colibri Boutique Hotels is committed to the responsible use, sanitation, and sustainability of water. Additionally, we are part of the Specialized Working Group on Water Education, Communication, and Culture (GETECCA in Spanish) of Quintana Roo, and we collaborate with local and regional communities to raise awareness about responsible water use practices.
TRAINING AND CELEBRATIONS
We continuously provide training on environmental regulations and sustainability to our teams. We also recognize that every celebration is an opportunity to implement sustainability. Therefore, each Children’s Day, we celebrate the sons and daughters of our Colibri family with themes that have a high environmental and social impact, prioritizing community well-being and conservation.
EDUCATION
BIO FERIA AND CUMBRE BIOSPHERA
This year we participated in BioFeria Tulum and Cumbre Biosphera. At BioFeria, the largest sustainability event in Latin America, our Social Responsibility Manager gave seminars on plastic reduction and community ties, while our Executive Chef from La Zebra discussed our composting project. At Cumbre Biosphera, we gave a presentation on plastic reduction as part of this event that brings together governments, businesses, and universities to promote planetary regeneration.
PARTICIPATION IN EDUCATIONAL FORUMS
We firmly believe that environmental education is a fundamental element in building societies that are more connected to and respectful of their environment. Therefore, we actively participate in State and National Environmental Education Forums and give talks and lectures at local and regional schools and universities, encouraging participants to improve their relationship with the environment.
ENGAGEMENT WITH EDUCATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS
We support and collaborate with local civil society organizations (NGOs) that address environmental issues within the community, thereby strengthening their development. In recent months, we have worked with the Puntos Limpios Tulum initiative, assisting them with digital designs and providing training for trainers who teach waste management topics in public primary schools.
COMMUNITY
BOTTLE CAP BANK
Making a difference one bottle cap at a time; We collect all plastic bottle caps that come to our facilities and donate them to the National Bottle Cap Bank to finance cancer and leukemia treatment for vulnerable children and adolescents.
TELETÓN
We are proud to support Teletón, an international organization that provides free therapy to children and adolescents with disabilities. We regularly donate prizes for their silent auctions and galas.
NGO’s DONATIONS
We regularly donate bedding, household items, and school supplies to local organizations that work with vulnerable families, women in situations of violence, and animals living on the streets.
COMMERCIAL TIES WITH THE COMMUNITY
We have local and regional suppliers who preserve customs and traditions while responsibly interacting with nature. We are committed to community development that respects local Mayan identity and strengthens not only commercial but also community ties.
ORGANIC CORN FROM TIHOSUCO
We are proud to support this pilot project in Tihosuco, Q.R. This initiative promotes sustainable organic farming and preserves traditional Mayan agricultural practices. We are currently incorporating this locally sourced organic corn at La Zebra, with plans to expand its use to all Colibri Boutique Hotels.
HONEY, PROPOLIS, AND CHARCOAL
At Colibri Boutique Hotels, we strive to align more closely with the Circular Economy and sustainability models. That’s why, in sourcing our supplies, we incorporate community-sourced products and those derived from environmentally and operationally sustainable practices.
PESCA CON FUTURO
Our chefs are ambassadors of Pesca con Futuro, a strong movement that promotes responsible and sustainable consumption of fishery and aquaculture products to ensure the future of fishing and aquaculture, as well as the biodiversity of aquatic species, in Mexico and Latin America.
